Diana Soh composes the score for a new rendition of Bizet’s Carmen

‘The Carmen Case’, a new interpretation of Bizet’s carmen, will premiere at the TAP in POITIERS In may 2023

This new rendition of Bizet’s famous opera, Carmen, takes a new perspective, questioning both our empathy with Don José and our acceptance of Carmen’s death. ‘The Carmen Case’ takes us to court for José’s trial for murdering Carmen, with the added character of a Judge.  It mixes Bizet’s music (the music retraces the story up until Carmen’s death) and Diana Soh’s new composition (representing an interpretation of what happened, revealing what memory retains or omits).

For the premiere at the TAP in Poitiers in May, Ensemble Ars Nova examine this new work alongside conductor Lucie Leguay. Written and staged by Alexandra Lacroix and composed by Diana Soh, the opera is a co-production with La Chapelle Musicale in Brussels and Théâtre du Luxembourg, the Gulbenkian Foundation and Opéra de Bordeaux, where the work will be repeated in January 2024 (with Ensemble Lucilin).
