Reginald Mobley sings Carmina Burana with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

this week, Reginald Mobley will join the chicago symphony orchestra, conducted by osmo vänskä, in a programme of works by montgomery, rautavaara, and orff

In collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and United Voices Chicago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents a run of three mega-performances this week at Symphony Center. Reginald Mobley performs alongside soprano Joélle Harvey and baritone Hugh Russell in Orff’s famous Carmina Burana. The orchestra also present Rautavaara’s concerto for birds and orchestra, which features recordings of bird calls from arctic Finland, and the CSO Mead Composer-in-Residence Jessie Montgomery’s The Star-Spangled Banner.

Orff’s Carmina Burana is known throughout the world, famous for its huge orchestral and choral forces, as well as its 25-movement form. Based upon 24 poems from the medieval collection Carmina Burana, the text speaks mainly of wealth, the fickleness of fortune, the ephemeral nature of life, the pleasures and perils of activities like drinking, gluttony, gambling and lust. This satirical libretto is complemented by a largely homophonic sound, with shimmering orchestrations and challenging solo arias.
