Stir Vancouver release an exclusive interview with Reginald Mobley

earlier this year, reginald mobley spoke with stir vancouver about his musical vision, shedding light on the ways in which he challenges modern boundaries

Reginald Mobley is an artist who continually searches for freedom in life and in music. In his music, Mobley challenges social preconceptions and breaks down boundaries of class, sexuality, and race through juxtaposing and re-contextualising supposedly opposing music. In his Raise, raise the voice concert with Early Music Vancouver in February, Mobley mixes Henry Purcell and Duke Ellington in an attempt to demonstrate the possibilities for music programming to question and interrogate assumptions about what music means and who it is aimed at.

In this exclusive interview, Mobley speaks of the freedom that becoming a countertenor offered him, describing the way in which it allowed him to explore himself, giving him a sense of belonging and purpose. Equally, the freedom of baroque music, with its ornamental lines, and of gospel and jazz, the music he was brought up listening to, excites him and he enjoys finding the parallels between the two. Like gospel and jazz, he thinks that early music is extremely relevant, addressing many issues and themes and still speak to us today, and he regards himself as an example by which to show people that this music is not elitist, but accessible to all.

Mobley also sheds light on his own personality and his introverted tendencies that lead him to spend a lot of time daydreaming and visualising. He finds that through music he is able to express himself and ponder his own existence. It is not surprising that Mobley is so captivating in performance given his natural tendencies to create and imagine worlds different from, and arguably better than, the elitist one that we know.
