Mason nominated for British Composer Award!

Christian Mason's Tuvan Songbook has been nominated for a 2017 British Composer Award.

Tuvan Songbook, nominated in the 'Small Chamber' category, was written for and premiered by the Ligeti Quartet. On the piece, Mason commented:

It was the practice of throat singing - following workshops with Michael Ormiston - that first attracted me to Tuvan music, and this songbook is the first in a series that I am writing for the Ligeti Quartet, each engaging with a different vocal tradition. But it is not just overtones that abound here, there are galloping rhythms aplenty, and though I am no horse rider I tried to keep the horses galloping in my imagination while composing these pieces. The British Composer Awards are an annual awards evening with the aim of highlighting the works of outstanding composers and thereby bringing them to a greater audience. Mason's work is one of three which have been selected as a finalist in this category.

The category winners will be announced at the British Composer Award ceremony on Wednesday 6 December at the British Museum, London. BBC Radio 3 will broadcast exclusive coverage of the Awards on Sunday 10th December at 19h30.
