Reginald mobley will perform as a soloist with the monteverdi choir for the king’s coronation

Tomorrow, Reginald Mobley will perform alongside the Monteverdi Choir under the baton of Sir John Eliot Gardiner for the Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla. In a recent article published by Classical Music (BBC Music Magazine), it has been revealed that Prince Charles personally asked Sir John Eliot Gardiner to prepare the pre-service music and specified that he wanted to be diverse and inclusive in his musical offerings. Reginald travels from San Francisco for this momentous occasion, following which he will remain in the UK for a series of concerts with the Academy of Ancient Music (see below).

The entire service, plus all twelve of the Coronation commissions by composers including Judith Weir, Master of the King’s Music, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, will be recorded and released by Decca Records on the day of the service itself and released globally in physical form on 15th May.

In July, Reginald mobley will perform with Baptiste trotignon at the bbc Proms at Sage Gateshead

It is with great excitement that we also announce Reginald Mobley’s performance at the BBC Proms in July. After producing an album of American spirituals with Agave Baroque, which was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in 2022, Reginald Mobley will now be joined by his regular collaborator and pianist, Baptiste Trotignon, with whom he will be releasing his first solo album, also of American spirituals, later this month.

'Spirituals are true hymns to resilience, whose beauty and strength of both lyrics and music symbolise hope and faith in humanity,' says Reginald. 'This project’s aim is to do justice to this musical heritage and to honour its past performers.' ~ Reginald Mobley

The duo will perform works taken from the album at the BBC Proms concert:

‘Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen’

This song is believed to have originated during the slavery period in the US (1776-1865), but was not published until just after this time. The song has already risen to fame and has been recorded by several famous artists such as Louis Armstrong and Marian Anderson.

‘Steal Away’

This melody was supposedly written by Wallace Willis, a former slave celebrated for producing the lyrics to the song Swing low, sweet chariot. In a similar vein, Steal Away has a hidden meaning for slaves, alluding to an escape to freedom.

The songs quoted above are just two out of many that audiences will get to hear at the concert on 23rd July.
